Tata Technologies discovered ransomware incident; investigation ongoing: Report

Tata Technologies discovered a ransomware incident that impacted some of its IT services, but did not disrupt client delivery services, per a company filing addressed to BSE Limited and the National Stock Exchange of India Limited.

The filing was dated January 31, with Tata Technologies disclosing the same as per SEBI regulations.

Tata Technologies noted that the ransomware incident affected a few IT assets, which were suspended temporarily and later restored as a precautionary measure.

“Our Client delivery services have remained fully functional and unaffected throughout. Further detailed investigation is underway in consultation with experts to assess the root cause and to take remedial action as necessary,” stated the company in the filing.

Ransomware refers to a type of cyber-attack wherein malicious users access the victims’ documents/device and deny them access to their files by encrypting the material. The hackers may then demand payment in order to decrypt the files and return access to the user. They may also demand payment in exchange for not leaking potentially sensitive information to the public or selling it on the dark web.

Paying the ransom does not guarantee a secure outcome for the victim. To prevent such attacks and mitigate damage, companies invest heavily in upgrading their networks, encrypting their own data, and keeping copies of essential data in secure locations.

The exact details of how the cyber-attack unfolded at Tata Technologies are not yet public.
