Humane’s AI Pin will go out of service as HP buys startup for $116 million

AI startup Humane has announced that they have been acquired by HP for $116 million. In a blog post, the hardware firm said that their AI Pins which had grabbed eyeballs last year will be discontinued.

HP will be taking over most of Humane’s assets including their software platform, intellectual property, patents and employees.

“Your AI Pin will continue to function normally until 12 pm PST on February 28, 2025. After this date, it will no longer connect to Humane’s servers and Center access will be fully retired,” the note informed customers who had purchased the $499 device.

Meanwhile, any customers who bought the AI Pin in the last 90 days will be refunded.

Founded in 2019 by former Apple engineers Imran Chaudhri and Bethany Bongiorno, the AI Pin was primed to be a pathbreaking AI wearable device. Having initially raised $230 million, the startup slowly fell into trouble after poor feedback around the gadget.

Eventually, customers returning the device outgrew the sales, a report from The Verge revealed in August. Then, the AI startup warned buyers against using the Pin’s charger due to fire risks.

The Humane team will now be forming a new group called HP IQ that HP has said will be an “AI innovation lab focused on building an intelligent ecosystem across HP’s products and services for the future of work.”

As HP pushes towards adding more AI capabilities, the move is expected to help transform its AI experiences.
