Elon Musk says report of Meta’s $200 billion AI data centre project “sounds high”

Billionaire Elon Musk has said that a report claiming Meta was planning to build a new data centre campus for more than $200 billion “sound high.”

Musk posted in response to another user’s summary of the news on X, on February 26. It was not clear whether Musk was referring to the price of the reported project, or criticising the idea as a whole.

Meta’s potential investment was reported by The Information, citing anonymous sources. The data centre campus could be built in Louisiana, Wyoming or Texas, amongst other options, per the outlet.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and X owner Elon Musk were once rivals who exchanged jibes online and challenged each other to a cage fight.

However, since Donald Trump’s return to the White House, Zuckerberg has ended fact-checking on Meta apps to instead follow the Community Notes-style verification method used on Musk’s X.
